A Witch in Algiers

Shakespeare in the Ruff presents A Witch in Algiers, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest by award-winning playwright Makram Ayache.

The titular character holds a baby in her arms, water in the background. She looks at the camera with piercing blue eyes.

For the past five weeks, I've been so fortunate to be working with some incredible artists on a new adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest.

Come rain or shine (and wow, did we ever get rain!), we've been rehearsing at Withrow Park to bring this beautiful show, written by Makram Ayache, to life.

In Shakespeare's original text, the magician Prospero summons a storm and plots vengeance against the conspirators who abandoned him and his daughter on a remote island.

This adaptation, A Witch in Algiers, decenters Prospero and gives new voice to two neglected characters from the source material: Caliban, Prospero’s servant on the island; and Sycorax, Caliban’s mother, who lived on the island prior to Prospero’s arrival and is never seen, only mentioned, in The Tempest.

The show runs everyday (except Mondays) at 7:30pm from August 20th - September 1st.
