the future is disabled

Everything has been different; everything has to be different; everything can be different.

Today's read:

I came across this great article on Briarpatch Magazine which came out a month before Leah Piepzna-Samarasinha's latest book: The Future is Disabled: Prophecies, Love Notes and Mourning Songs. In it, Leah proposes a future where disabled people are recognized as crucial and critical to surviving climate change, global pandemics, and fascism.

I confess I haven't read it but it's on my need-to-read book list and until then, I'll just keep reading other people's rave reviews about it!

Everything has been different; everything has to be different; everything can be different.
“There are disabled people in the future”
An interview with Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha about “crip doulaing,” the future of the disability justice movement, and understanding access and care as joyful.

If you're interested there are lots of recordings on YouTube of Leah reading from their book. This one is especially personable and reflective (timestamp 4:30) of Leah reading poems and talking about disability in the context of climate change.
